Oral Contraception Prescriptions

Please consider this criteria to access this service:

• Combined Oral Contraceptive (COC) is offered from first menstruation up to and including 49 years of age.

• Progestogen Only Pill (POP) is offered from first menstruation up to and including 54 years of age.

• Individuals under 16 years of age need to be assessed as competent using Fraser Guidelines9.

• Individuals 16 years of age and over and need to be assessed as having the capacity to consent.

• You must not have had a gap of any duration in your oral contraception. You cannot be re-initiated on your original prescription as part of this service.

People access the service via one of the following routes:

• They have been identified as clinically suitable by the community pharmacist and accept the offer of the service

• They self-refer to a community pharmacy

• They have been referred by their general practice as they have requested a repeat prescription and a review is needed

• They have been referred from a sexual health clinic (or equivalent)

• They have been referred from other NHS service providers, eg urgent treatment centres or NHS 111

Consultations can be face-to-face or via telephone

• A repeat supply of a combined oral hormonal contraception will require your BMI and blood pressure measurement

• A person accessing the service may offer their own weight, height and blood pressure measurements

• Repeat supplies of up to 12 months duration can be made and this will be determined by the pharmacist

• Repeat supplies will be made in line with the person’s previous supply

• Your consultation will last no longer than 30 minutes and can be booked through our Simply BOOK Calendar

• You can book an appointment online

• Walks-ins are welcomed at all of our branches
